What happens when an unexpected death occurs?
If someone dies unexpectedly at home, in a hospital, or in a public place, the death is referred to the State Coroner’s Office. During this time, a funeral director can step in to support you, liaising directly with the Coroner’s Office on your behalf.
How do we arrange a funeral?

Are all funerals the same?
No. Funerals can be traditional, informal, religious, or non-denominational, depending on your needs. We tailor each service to reflect the personality and wishes of the person being remembered.
What do I need to consider when selecting the day and time of the funeral?
It’s important not to feel rushed when setting a date. Think about any religious or cultural traditions, and the availability of a celebrant, priest, or minister if you’d like them to be involved. If the death has been referred to the Coroner, this will also affect the timing. In those cases, it generally takes six to nine days before the person who has died is released into our care, and we’ll keep you updated throughout.
When is the Death Certificate issued?
A Death Certificate is usually issued around 3 weeks after the death has been registered with the registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. We will gather the required information from you during the arrangement and will register the death on your behalf after the funeral has taken place.
What is embalming?
Embalming is a process that temporarily preserves the body, often used if there will be a delay before the funeral or if the deceased will be transported over long distances. It’s optional, and our team can explain when it may be appropriate.
Do I have to view the deceased?
Viewing the deceased is a personal choice. Some families find comfort in saying goodbye, while others prefer to focus on the service. We offer viewings at our Torquay chapel immediately prior to a funeral held there; otherwise, Torquay families can visit our Newcomb location for viewings.
Do Kings Funerals cater for both burial and cremation?
Yes. We can arrange traditional burials, cremations, and memorial-only services, tailoring each to meet your family’s wishes and cultural or personal preferences.
